HIGH SCHOOLERS, A RESORT, AND A CAUSE WORTH DRIVING FOR

Next Sunday, September 20, students from Riverside High School's DECA chapter are running a charity pickleball tournament at Lansdowne Resort in Leesburg. Proceeds go to the Parkinson Voice Project in Loudoun County, which provides speech therapy for people living with Parkinson's.

Think about that for a second. High schoolers organized a tournament at a resort for a local cause. Loudoun barely has pickleball events on any calendar, and this one showed up fully formed. We promised them a spot in this issue and we're glad to keep it.

THE BRINE LINE: FOUNDING MEMBER #4 CAME OUT SWINGING

EZ claimed a founding slot last Sunday and filed his first report within the hour. By Tuesday he had covered three courts (Turkey Thicket, Kraken Pickleball, and Dill Dinkers North Bethesda) and seeded their open-play blocks, including the Kraken note that says, honestly, that true open play is rare there.

That last one matters. A register that only says nice things isn't a register, it's a brochure. When a founding member's first contributions include "here's what this place is not good for," the whole thing gets more trustworthy for you.

PLAYERS ARE TEACHING THE MAP WHO SHOWS UP

Two weeks ago we added open-play blocks to court pages: who plays, when, at what level, always dated and credited. We seeded eleven courts to start. This week the community took over. New taps came in for Bauer Drive (weekday evenings run 4.0+), Welsh Park (weekend afternoons, beginner-friendly), and Cunningham Park, none of which we prompted.

If you know a court's rhythm, it's a few taps on any court page. Someone at your level is trying to figure out where to show up.

One seasonal note: it's getting darker earlier, and once daylight saving time ends, the after-work game only survives at courts with lights. If you know whether a court is lit, add it. Whether you can still play at 6pm in November is exactly the kind of information the next player can't find anywhere else.

A NEIGHBOR BUILT THE SCOREKEEPER YOUR ROUND ROBIN NEEDS

We got a full walkthrough of PKL Tracker this week. It was built by Adam, a DMV player and semi-retired developer whose Monday-night mixed doubles group was juggling pairings in Excel and kept drawing the same partners. So he fixed it.

His tool handles the matchup math for a 17-to-25-player round robin, needs no accounts and no login, keeps working when courtside wifi doesn't, and exports scores in DUPR format when the night's done. One device sits at the kitchen counter and players tap in scores between rounds. A Rockville group used it for a 30-person King of the Court night and liked it.

CLOSES THIS WEEK: VOLO'S 15 DC LEAGUES

As promised last issue: Volo's DC fall season, fifteen leagues across the city, closes registration Friday, September 18. If you've been on the fence, this is the week to decide.

Also on the board: Mixed Medals Month opens at the Woodbridge Pickleball Club with blind-draw tournaments September 19 and 20 at Ferlazzo, and a new two-day charity challenge lands in Ashburn October 9 and 10, the Wellness Loudoun Pickleball Challenge, supporting mental-wellness programming in the county. That makes two Loudoun events on the board after months of none.
